Auto tranny fluid color - Cause for concern??

I bought an 88 9000 turbo with the dreaded Automatic tranny. The car is in beautiful condition and the tranny shifts smoothly. Not knowing it's history, I immediately changed the fluid. The fluid I dumped was very dark in color (looked more like oil than red tranny fluid). I realize that when you drain the fluid you only get about half of it out since about half is retained in the torque converter. Because I was concerned by the color I purchased a filter and changed it again. It has only been two weeks and it appeared very dark again. The filter I replaced seemed in very good condition however. Was it dark only because it mixed with what remained after the first change or could something be causing it? What causes the fluid to darken anyway? I am preparing this car for my daughter so I am looking for some degree of confidence before I give it to her. Thanks for any (and all) replies.
