While Bill's technique is probably the best one around, if you don't have the tools or access to them and you want to save the tie rod end, you can try the Big F'ing Hammer approach - apply firmly to the end of the steering knuckle ajacent to the tie rod end hold therein. Worked like a champ for me a couple of weeks ago, and I hope I'll get similar results this week when I do the other side.
Why this works is that a large force applied to the steering knuckle there will momentarily distort the hole, allowing the tie rod end to pop free. You won't do any permanent damage to the knuckle, except for possibly marking up the exterior metal there (cosmetic only).
