The ABS system does a lot of self-checks, and one thing it does is compare the signals between the various wheel sensors. In first gear you can get a decent amount of torque, and are probably spinning a wheel. This is especially true when turning - much easier to break traction if you're asking a tire to both accelerate and turn at the same time.

Normally, you shouldn't get an ABS self-test failure just because you're spinning a front wheel, but I suspect that one of the parameters the ABS tests is on the hairy edge of failure, and the extra noise/offset of spinning a wheel puts it over the edge. Brake pads and fluid won't help here. I'd live with it unless it gets worse - then I'd bring the car to the dealer and have him read out the ABS codes. It'll probably point to a single wheel sensor which you would then replace.

The first check for the EDU is a flashlight. Shine the flashlight at the EDU, and if you see the digits, and they change when you hit the INFO button, then the EDU is OK and the bulbs are bad. I don't recommend checking the bulbs first (although they're the most common fault) because replacing them is a bear. See Quasi's site and the Townsend site (http://www.townsendimports.com) for EDU bulb replacement.

Yes, the ACC comes on with the rear window in defrost if the outside temp is below some set temperature. It will come on even if you are well above freezing, because it helps burn off condensation from dew.

Enjoy!
