I purchased my '98 9K CSET auto in August 2001. It had 42K miles on it, and was/is in mint condition. They (a used Saab dealership in upstate NY, USA) were asking $19K for it, but I paid just over $18K for it. I had bought a '97 9K CSET auto from them in March 2001 (was totalled in July) with 47K miles on it that was in PRISTINE condition and paid $17.5K for it. They now have a '98 9K CSET auto in Dark Blue with 47K miles in excellent condition, and are asking $16.9K for it. And all of these vehicles came with 1-year dealer warranties, as well as my '98 still being under Saab factory warranty. Take a look at Edmunds.com, NADAguides.com, and KBB.com to find the book value on the car. Just remember that a dealer will ask slightly higher for it since they back the vehicle up with warranties.

I have no idea how it stacks up against a 9-5, but I can say from my own personal preference that the 9K looks much better. The 9-5 looks like all the other cars out there now, whereas the 9K has an upscale, rich, and performance look to it. Reliability seems about on par with any other vehicle. Just look at this BB and you will see some cars have more problems than others.

I also own a '96 NG 900S 4-dr auto. Totally loved that car until I bought my 9K and gave the 900S to my wife. Both cars have their high- and low- points, but the 9K definitely has better eye-appeal.
