In addition to the software change, parts of the hardware are also changed each year to accommodate different sensors, such as the 1 oxygen sensor to 2 oxygen sensor in 1996. Between 1993 and 1994, there is a throttle position sensor change that required different voltage level inputs. Between 1995 and 1996, the EVAP sensor change required reversed polarity drive and oxygen sensor changed from 12W to 18W etc. etc. etc....
Unless you have the exact electronic schematic from SAAB for the ECU with the exact part values specified, you will not see significant differences between ECUs. It could be as simple as changing the value of a single resistor to accommodate a change in the sensor. Certainly this type of change will not be visible to the untrained eyes because of the surface-mount components on the ECU. Triggering the check engine light indicates there is a problem in the hardware/software interface.
