The LH 2.2 in the '88 9000T has no fault code in the ECU memory - there are no codes to pull.

Disconnect the battery and leave it off for a minute or two (make sure you've got the Radio code to re-enter!) and see if that clears things. If not, then you need to do some good old troubleshooting.

The check engine light is coming on because some sensor is out of range. Candidates include the Air Mass Meter, O2 sensor, and engine temperature sensor. If the car idles OK and accelerates OK, then it's probably not the AMM. Pull the spark plugs and see if you're running rich (black) or lean (white). Put a voltmeter on the O2 sensor and read the voltage - it should swing between 0.2 and 0.9 volts, crossing 0.5 about 1/second.

Remember, just because a sensor is out of range doesn't mean the sensor is bad - Because it's hard to measure a building with a ruler doesn't mean the ruler is faulty. For example, the Check Engine light will come on if the O2 sensor is stuck hard over full rich or full lean. It could be a bad sensor. Then again, an air leak could cause lean running, or a faulty FPR cause rich running. If the AMM isn't set correctly, it can cause rich or lean running.

If the car is running right and the spark plugs look good (light grey), then chances are it's not a major sensor, but instead the engine temp sensor. But the LH 2.2 won't give you much help. That's why they went to fault codes on later cars.
