Your mechanic is probably right. Those fittings tend to corrode and can be really hard to get off. Sometimes you can get them with creative techniques like slitting them lengthwise with a Dremel tool then prying them open with a screwdriver. But depending on the mecahnic's labor rate, that may cost more than a new condenser.
Of course if he replaces the condenser, there's another potential problem. There's another hose attached to the condenser - it goes to the receiver-drier up by the dash. The connection for that hose may be corroded also, requiring its replacement. Oh and of course the rec-drier should also be replaced as a matter of good practice.
