Auto Trans noise in 95 9000 CS

I have a '95 9000CS Auto Trans with 155,000 miles. At about 120,000 the cars developed a rattling noise at idle (in gear or in park). I also noticed a slight leak (2 pints in 20,000 miles). The dealer advised that the noise was coming from the Transmission pump hence the leak and noise. The dealer indicated that they would not repair the pump but could install a new Tranny for about $3,000. I have had the car since new and have been extremely satisifed with it's overall reliability (great car). The dealer suggested that I keep an eye on the Trans fluid level, keep it topped off and if the leak gets worse deal with it then. While my dealings with my dealer's service dept. have been generally very good, their suggestion in this case sounds like a lazy man's answer. i.e. do this and the trans will fail so you repair it or are forced to buy a new car. I would think that the pump could be repired for less (by a shop) than the cost of a new trans. Any comments would be appreciated.
Another SAAB story!
