Engine rattle, chain sound - longish

-94 CSE 2,3 FPT, 112k miles. Regular synthetic changes every 6000 miles since new. Just noticed a slight rattling sound coming from the cam drive area. Only after cold (freezing) start, for less than a minute. It's not a lifter or fuel rail. Definately coming from the cam drive. I turned the engine backwards (as Ari adviced earlier) to free the tensioner. I will take off the cam cover and inspect timing marks and replace the chain pad on the cam cover when I get a chance. The rattle sounds very much like coming from the cam cover itself, not from lower in the engine. It's a tough call to tell - though. Has anybody been able to quiet a rattle by replacing only the pad?
A SAAB mechanic told me to especially listen for rattles during decreasing revs, i.e. rev the engine and listen to any rattles during revs coming down (U call this over-run?).
I did this and yes there's a short sound, just a second or two - like a "brand new chain in a chain saw" sound. Does NOT sound unhealthy at all to my ear. Definately not a rattle, just a sound of a chain. How should this be interpreted?
Any comments are wellcome.
Thanks, Tapani
