You should always follow the recommendations of the vehicle mfgr.
The markings for max tyre psi are for the tyre. The 2 variables
that dictate tyre pressure (psi) are; load and speed. If you are doing sustained high speed driving you will need to increase psi. We are of
course talking of speeds in excess of 100 mph (160 kph). Higher speeds
put larger loads on the tyre. Also if you decide to add more weight to
the vehicle (400 lbs/ 180 k) you should adjust psi accordingly. The
correct tyre pressure will help the tyre sidewall from recieving damage
and help keep a more uniformed footprint (square) leading to more consistent vehicle performance. Tyre mfgrs say that as a general rule
tyre psi will change with temperature. If the tyre psi on a 70 degree
day is 35 and you drive the car for several miles, friction of the tyres
will create an increase in tyre carcass (casing) temperatures. If you
measure the tyre psi now and it reads 42, the tyre has increased in
temperature by 70 degrees. For every 10 degree F change in temperature you will get a 1 psi change in AIR pressure. If you have a tyre inflated with
99.5% NITROGEN, then you will experience less then 1 psi change.

In closing higher psi leads to easy steering to a degree, increase in centre tread wear and a rougher ride unless compensated by an increase in
weight

lower psi gives a smoother ride , sluggish steering response and a increase in outsite edge tyre wear. I could of course go on, but this should help
you.
