you're not going to get much help from them at all in snow and ice.
I just picked up a set of winter rims/tires (thanks Richard!) and I can't believe the difference. The tires are 185/65-15 Gislaved and aren't that new but with the worse ones in the front, about 40% tread, and the good ones in the rear, at least 70%, my back end feels glued to the road and I've greatly reduced front wheel spin. I do notice corners feel a bit mushy on dry roads but that is to be expected with a softer sidewall.
We've got a nice coating of freezing rain so far tonight and I felt pretty good driving 35 miles from work.
Narrower tires make quite the difference in deeper snow or slush since they tend to dig down to road surface rather than float around on top. I don't believe they are superior on ice. I would think if both were snow tires, you'd want more contact offering more grip; but then again what the hell do I know.
I do know that many years ago I had a '73 Ford Gran Torino with 14" wide Mickey Thompson style tires on the rear and I went NOWHERE in the snow and ice, and hydroplaned like crazy over 40 mph in the rain. Those wide tires were only good for howling brakestands and impressive burnouts.
