Wait until they're metal-on-metal then change them 2 weeks ago ;^)
Seriously, the 4mm recommendation is based on a certain inspection interval - the principle being that if they have > 4mm now, they should be able to last until the next time they're scheduled to be checked.
In reality, the brakes will function just fine with 1mm of pad left, as long as there's no metal contact anywhere. Bottom line is you should be able to let 'em get as thin as you want, as long as you replace them before metal contact is made, otherwise your repair bill just quadrupled.
Of course you can also do what most drivers in the USA do - wait until you hear grinding noises, drive the car for another month, then take it in and get all the pads and rotors replaced and complain how expensive it is to repair cars these days!
