Won't bother you with obvious things like service history and replacements.

What kind of car is it you mean? I guess it is a turbo.

I must say there is a bit of a dilemma for me: the 2.3T 200bhp is fun to drive, but has this TCS system that is very prone to failure on the 92 and 93 models. You can tell it is on the car by chacking for a small rectangular 'box' on the driver side of the inlet manifold. If you can get one without that you still like to drive, that's a big advantage.

Further for these cars; things that can fail and cost big bucks:

The A/C compressor: check for rattling of the compressor, and put the ACC on 'LO' during your drive to check operations quickly;

Check for rattling noises from the timing cover (belt side) of the engine: Timing chain & sprocket replacement is pretty expensive;

Heater core leaking: is there moist on the passenger side carpet or do you smell antifreeze when turning the heater on?

ACC blower and speed regulator: check for squeeking noises and see if the fan speed can be easily regulated (although it tends to show up on longer trips only)

Is it an auto? mine runs still incredibly smooth after 170k miles, but I have driven cars that have a bit of a rough shift between certain gears. At least have it adjusted and the ATF changed if you don't know much about the car's history.
If you buy private, and don't have much of service records, it is not necessarily a bad thing. Price is lower, and as long as you can tell there a no very expensive repairs ahead, just give it a regular service at a dealer or a mechanic that has access to the diagnostics.

gone too long. great car, love my cse 2.3T
