I installed a JBL 250W amp in the trunk. I ran clean power from the battery through the firewall, under the carpet to the trunk and to the amp for power. I tapped into the antenna's power for on-signal power. I used the amp's speaker level inputs for the source.
I disconnected the speaker wires from the rear speakers and fed those into the amp. Then from the amp I rewired the rear speakers...those speakers now produce sound through the amps adjustable crossover.
I then connected a rear ported subwoffer box that houses two MTX 10" subs to the amps low frequency speaker outputs.
I finished by calibrating the sub/speakers with an SPL meter. The sound is so clean and smooth, never muddy. The trunk acts as the perfect area for bass production.
I typically listen to jazz and the sub accurately reaches way down to places the stock stereo could never imagine.
FYI, i have the bass setting on the HK head unit set to -1...more than that becomes too boomy.
I am planning on replacing the head unit and feeding the amp with pre-amp outputs instead of the speaker level ones I use now...then I will rewire all my speakers to originate from the amp.
Pictures available on request.
