I don't know about wire splicing, but the internal components (contacts and sliders)of the switch units are interchangable. If you pull off the rubber boot covering the switch box, you will see that the box itself has a snap together cover. This cover can be removed by carefully inserting a sharp flat tool into the groove/space between the cover and main box and prying upward. It is best to work around the periphery at several points where the snaps are located rather than trying to lift it at one place.
Inside is a very simple and robust switch layout. After lifting out the switch sliders (they are interchangable except for orientation)the contacts are exposed and can be either cleaned and/or replaced with better units from your old switch set. Once you have renewed the contacts, the whole thing snaps back together and the rubber boot can be replaced.
It is not obvious from your description what symptoms you experienced, so I'm not sure if this will cure your problem. For example, if it is the memory "brain" box instead of the switches, the above procedure will likely not be effective. Good luck.
