Warning!!! Set a limit on the trouble shooting charges. You do not want to give them an open check. If they are compentent they should be able to zero in on the problem. They should already know the systems and should not be learning on your car, and you should not be paying for on the job training. That is why you pay technician hourly rates.
I suggest you agree on pre-approved man-hours first. Afterwards, if you want them to continue, negotiate with them to drop overhead & profit charges. The mechanic has to get payed, but if they do not resolve the culprit within reasonable time & cost, it is a reflection on the degree of their expertise.

I got shafted on a similar problem by an independent Saab mechanic in Dallas (Irving). Being 300 plus miles away from home did not help.

Have the mechanic check the ASR module. On my no start problem, the explanation given was that "automatic spin reduction" module had an internal leak that grounded the crank sensor signal. This prevented the crank sensor signal from getting to the DI/APC,
