Auto Transmission & Starter Problems

Long time reader, first time writer.
I have a 1989 Saab 9000s that I love, however I have two problems to conquer. First, the auto tranny looks to have been replaced, but it slips b/w 3rd gear and D. Also, I have no power whatsoever. I know that it is a 4 cylinder engine, but 0-60 in 16 seconds is ridiculous. I think this is due to it not shifting right. Sometimes it shifts way too early, other times it doesn't shift at all, and other times it doesn't seem to "know" when to down shift. Could the transmission just need something adjusted, and if so what is it?
Second, when my car gets warm (such as on a long drive) and I park it and turn it off, when I try to immediately restart it won't start. The power and lights are one, but when I turn the key the starter does not turn over. Would this be a starter problem, or maybe the gear shift lock out?
Please reply ASAP cause I would like to slay these two "dragons".
