The Firestone SZ-50EP should be in this list, which is the #1 tire on the Tire Rack's "ultra-high-performance" survey. I'm on my third set, second for Aero, and I continue to be impressed by them: No weak points, except for average wear (~30k on my last set, 35k on my first). Traction is superior, especially in the wet. Noise, low; ride, above average; price, good value. This is the only tire I've ever re-purchased, as I've never been totally satisfied and continually sought better performance.
Also, look into BS S03PP, which are priced actually lower than the SZ-50. The FS formerly was about the cheapest of the Z-rated tires, but I think FS is now playing on the excellent ratings and reputation the tire has achieved, and they are no longer a glaring bargain as before. The price keeps escalating. The S03PP's rank #1 in Tire Rack's "max performance" survey. The SZ-50 and S03PP use the same Uni-T techology, but the BS uses softer rubber, so should perform better but wear faster. Keep in mind that the FS is made by BS in Japan.
Frankly, even though I still think the FS's are apex performers, I may stray toward the Kumho next time for a higher bang-for-buck effect. How can you beat $69 for a tire that is obviously well-thought-of among its owners? Or, I may go for the S03PP's.
1) Michelin Pilots - If you refer to stock ZR replacements, good but not exemplary, except for tread life (excellent).
2) Bridgestone Potenza - Ranked #3 in Tire Rack's survey. Must be good.
I think Quasi tried these once.
3) Kumho 712 - Ranked #5 in same survey. Excellent prices. As stated, I'm tempted to try them next time because of low price alone. Friend has them mounted on Mustang and reports favorable results, if a bit noisy. If they perform and wear well, I can put up with a little road whine for $69 each!
4) Dunlop - I tried SP4000 and 8000 and was unimpressed. Decent performance with 8000, but poor wear (<20k). 4000's were a mistake, and I'll never buy all-season (no-season) tires again.
5) Pirelli - Average Z-rated tire with decent wear characteristics for P700Z. Stock tire on my '91 9KT 5-door.
