This is hard work! I only worked on the outer polished lip clear coated area as I didn't want to mess with any painting of the centers.
I started by using a power hand sander with medium grit paper suitable for metal, etc., to remove the worst spots and to remove the clearcoat that was still attached. I was too afraid of using anything labeled "coarse".
I worked my way around with that then_by hand_onto medium emory, then fine emory cloth. Next I used 220 for metal, then 240, then 320.
I also found some type of nonwoven metallic used for finishing metal called "Ultra sand" that resembles a flat sheet of steel wool. I used the very fine (00) which replaces 400, then super fine (0000) replaces 600-1200, then ultra fine (000000) which is the equivalent to 7000 grit paper. I even used this one over my painted center clear coat. I've never heard of 7000 grit so I'm taking their word for it. I then used a polishing/sealing compound to buff out any dullness.
I guess I'm happy with the results and it's cheaper than having them sent away for $100 each plus. I know I'll be spending probably 5-6 hours or more per wheel, but the satisfaction of having close to new wheels should outweigh the time spent. Cost is no more than $10 worth of sandpaper and most of it I already had.
I haven't decided if it will be worth getting them clear coated again or not. I guess time will tell, but they will never see winter roads again so I'm sure that will help. I'm going to run my steels/snows until May or until I get all 4 finished!

You can check out my before and after pics at my Ofoto album. Let me know what you think!

Thanks,
Shahn
