As the others have said, no, you don't have to pull the engine in a 9000. The reason to pull the head is because it makes it much easier to put the timing chain cover back on. Folks have put the timing chain cover back on without pulling the head.
Ander's point is good - if it's a high mile car, once the engine is open, think about doing the head gasket.
The timing and balance shaft chains are both driven by the crankshaft - the balance shaft chain does not go as high as the cams, but close.
As to a DIY job - that depends on the DIY'er, tools and time available. I don't know your experience level. I know folks that think nothing of swapping out an engine before dinner, and others that have done nothing more than changing air and oil filters, and maybe spark plugs. This is a fairly major task with lots of opportunities for screwing up. If you've had an engine apart (head off) before, then chains would be no problem. If you've done water pumps, oil pumps, and valve cover gaskets, then this would be a step up, but doable if you take your time.
That would be the other thing - mechanics are paid to work quickly, but a DIY can take time. If you can be without the car for a week and have a garage, then it's doable. You want to give yourself plenty of time, and even more time to get parts if you find out something isn't as expected.
Again, depending on mileage, I would consider replacing the timing chain and chain guides, along with the balance chain AND sprockets. No, the timing chain probably isn't worn, but do the chain and guides now, and you won't have to think about it again for the life of the car.
Good luck!
