Vague/wandering steering & marginal ball joint >>>

So my steering has become a point of worry.
I was having the wheels balanced and while the car was up on the lift I noticed that if I pushed/pulled on the bottom of the right wheel there was a small but noticeable lateral movement (maybe 1mm). I take this to mean that my lower ball joint is going (a mechanic pointed out the same movement on the left side before replacing the left ball joint one year ago). The steering has become a little strange, with the car sometimes wandering very slightly on uneven pavement (mostly when coasting, not under load). My motor mounts are also pretty bad, which of course contributes to this.
I am wondering if a ball joint can actually "fail," which I can imagine being quite catostrophic if it did. Is it dangerous to drive the car like this? Or is it more like a bad motor mount, which can't do any serious damage in the short term?
Thanks in advance!
