I have just embarked on a similar exercise, intent on replacing the head/exhaust/inlet gaskets, timimg & balance chains, plastic guides and the balance/timing tensioners. However, time is of the essence and I have just got to the stage with the rocker cover off along with the alternator, power steering pump and basically the odds & bits around the engine like the throttle housing, rubber hoses, etc. I had great difficulty in getting to the 2 no lower inlet manifold bolts and have decided to lift it with the head, disconnecting the petrol-injector bar and the wiring loom below. Both the serpentine belt idler pulley and the tensioner pulley & compressor had perished and will be replaced with new. At present I am stuck with the turbo/exhaust manifold joint connection where the 4 no 13mm nuts are very stubborn to turn. Have applied special spray today to loosen overnight! If not, then will try to heat loose with flame. With the water pump, you need total 3 no new O-rings from Saab, one for the steel pipe and 2 to go on the stub/engine connection. Also, don't know how I am going to open that 13mm bolt on the water pump pipe to turbo! Anyway, I thought I would tackle the complete work in 3-4 days but it has become a very challanging project! Many thanks to various contributions of advice from fellow SAABISTS here, especially Kyle.
