Balance shaft chain? Fuel leak? Two problems or one?

I have a '92 9000 Turbo (5-speed). I'll try to stay chronological with my explanation because a lot of this has happened over a lengthy period of time.

The first incident that I suspect could be related was the time that I installed an ECU upgrade from Swedish Dynamics. It shredded (literally) all my motor mounts, even ripping one completely off the mounting (some of you may remember that one), and also blew a head gasket. I removed the chip and returned it, replaced all the motor mounts, fixed the bracket for the one that had completely broken, and replaced the head gasket. During replacement of the head gasket, I discovered that the serpentine belt tensioner was jammed. After a quick sledge-hammer session, I freed it again and refitted it. I'm confident that it needs to be replaced but those things are expensive!! Anyway, afterward, I began to experience an occassional 'check engine' light, often accompanied by a slight smell of gasoline. It was relatively intermittent, would usually only happen every 40 or so miles. I suspected that I had messed up the refitting of the fuel rail and injectors. Then one day my clutch went out (unrelated). I replaced my transmission with a rebuilt one, along with a new slave cylinder, both from thesaabsite.com, aluminum flywheel from Swedish Dynamics, and a copper/kevlar clutch from the same. After getting the car back, the vibrations were slightly worse (assuming due to the flywheel) but I now notice a noise that I think has probably always been there but I had gotten used to it. It's a noise that sounds almost like a very quiet jackhammer. My mechanic suggested it sounds like chain slap... could it be the balance shaft chain? Would this explain the rough idle too, and the reason that I go through motor mounts so quickly? Or could it be that it's just belt slap from the broken tensioner, and the rough idle is caused by the flywheel and polyeurethane upper engine mount?

Also, just a few days ago, the two indicators for the headlights on the instrument cluster came on (red), and ever since then I have been experiencing a dead cylinder occassionally. Only for one or two revolutions, but I will be driving along and the engine will sputter, killing the electrical system (almost seems like a short). However, I was thinking maybe this is related to the aforementioned intermittent fuel leak? Wishful thinking, perhaps. Might it also be a failing DI cassette? Please, any advice would be much appreciated!
