The '92 MY handbook gives the following advice:

"To prevent the engine and transmission becoming unnecessarily hot when the car is stationary for prolonged periods (e.g. in traffic jams), move the selector lever to the N position. The normal selector position for waiting at traffic lights is D"

Also " If the car is stationary, keep your foot off the acclerator when moving the selector lever from one position to another. Pressing the acclerator when moving the selector lever will cause unexccessary wear in the transmission. N.B. Always keep your foot on the brake when selecting a drive position, to prevent the car creeping forward (or backwards if R is selected)."

I change my transmission oil at 12,000 miles (and clean the plastic mesh filter). My gearbox was rebuilt 15 months before I bought the car When I got it the oil was fairly black, possibly due to oil cooler hoses breaking down which I had to change. Since I change the Auto gearbox oil /fluid every 12,000 miles it is nice and clean now (SAAB recommneds every 24,000 miles but a lot can happen in that time and GBP £13 for oil is much cheaper than Autobox repairs).

The engine temp readout is 'direct' in this model year. The 9-10 o'clock position is fine. You will notice that it will fluctuate on warm up, thermostat open etc. That is normal. Later models have their temperature circuitry well 'damped'. If you have a 2 speed fan (large gold resistor by the radiator fan) check that the fan cuts in at both low and high speed). If you have a/c the low speed fan should run each time the compressor does.
