Hi Derek, Same thing happened to me in Kingman, Arizona a few yrs ago. Same symptoms but i don't remember the noise. It was the Alternator. Came to a stop in front of a Gas Station/Garage so i was lucky. They 1st put in a new, charged battery which started saab right up. Then checked the voltage output (and idiot light). Showed - i forget - like 4 volts or some value that indicated a toasted alternator. This seems like a good way to test yours. A DI Cassette failure wouldn't prevent saab from turning over, just running - i think.
The wife & i got to know Kingman over the next two days, waiting for the UPS truck. TWO Chinese restaurants!!
