I like to go with a somewhat heavier oil in the summer. More accurately, I like to go with a somewhat lighter oil in winter. It makes sense to me to run the heaviest weight oil that's reasonable for the season, so I switch to 10W40 in the winter months and run 15W50 the rest of the time. It's nice if you can tailor the weight based on your yearly milage and your change intervals. I drive about 15 K miles a year and change at 5 K intervals, so I run the lighter oil during the four coldest months and the heavier oil the rest of the time.
