I once accidently let the tensioner go all the way and it seperated. I put it back together and was able to compress it by placing the floor jack on the subframe, aiming it to the tensioner and jacked it up. Also quick way to hold the compression is to tie its top and bottom together several times with steel wire. No special tool needed. Good luck.
