It sounds like the same problem I've had. There is a one-way clutch in the transmission that locks the planet gears in first when the car comes to a stop. If this one-way clutch is slipping, you will periodically experience a no-go in first when the car is in any positiion other than 1 on the select. Occasionally, it will try to engage, but slip like a stripped ratchet (which it is)causing a shuddering and clunking sound as it tries to engage. If the car does not go after it comes to a stop, you should not race the engine, it will burn out the fiber and steel clutch disks. If the one-way clutch is the problem, you should be able to shift into first manually, come up to speed at about 10 - 20 mph and shift into drive and the transmission will upshift normally through the remaining gears.
It is also possible that the problem is due to dirty or low transmission fluid, the valve body, or the governor. Sounds like a visit to the tranny shop where they can make appropriate pressure and road tests is in order.
If the tranny has to be rebuilt, figure on $2K - $2.5K.
