Base boost Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Only Getting Half Boost! :-(, Skiddins, Fri, 5 Apr 2002 12:00:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You are experiencing what is probably the most common complaint with the turbo engines. So you are not alone.
If the engine control (Trionic, in your case) detects engine knock, it adjusts timing and reduces the boost. It can dial the boost back from full boost (all the way to the end of the yellow) down to the 'base boost' condition, which is about half way into the yellow.
Search the archives on 'Base Boost'. You'll see a lot. Remember, your car has the newer Trionic system, not the older LH systems.
Basically, either your engine is knocking and the car is reducing boost to compensate, or the boost control system has failed. The boost control system is designed so most failures result in base boost.
First off, if you aren't running premium (high octane) fuel, run a tank of the highest octane feul you can find. If this clears up the problem, you know the engine is knocking, and the system is doing what it should.
No matter what, make sure you've got the RIGHT sparkplugs properly gapped. The wrong plugs can screw things up.
If you've got the right plugs and get no joy from premium fuel, next would be to check the operation of the BPC (boost control) solenoid. But check the archives.
Good luck!
