First off, are you sure it's the transmission? Determining sound by phonetics is hard, but a hollow bellowing sounds more like air flow than gears. Have you checked the air pipes, especially the large ones? The intake side of the engine makes a surprising amount of noise, and the air filter does a pretty good job of muffling it. If you've got a hose off the air filter, no air filter, or something else in the intake system awry, tht could be the problem. Under hard acceleration the throttle is wide open, so any sound can easily move from the intake into the hoses.
Next, I would avoid AAMCO or A-1, or any other tranny chain. Not on priciple, but because the ZF transmission in the Saab is a tricky beast, and not many folks have worked with them. Most shops don't want to know about the ZF, and I'll bet dollars to donuts that they will just recommend putting in a rebuilt unit. They will treat it just like a light bulb - simply remove the old one, and put in a new one. I doubt very much that they would open it up and actually try and fix it. If you're willing to shell out for a rebuilt unit, then go with AAMCO.
If you really think it's the transmission, call around and find a shop, most likely and independent, that has had experience working on ZF's. It'll be an import shop, one that's had some BMW experience.
It won't hurt to ask the AAMCO folks if they've rebuilt ZFs, but I doubt it.
Good luck!
