Car checkout and old shoes Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 8 Apr 2002 16:41:02 In Reply to: 1991 Saab 9000 HELP!, Erik Ruggels, Sun, 7 Apr 2002 14:17:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Whenever I check out a used car, I have a simple test for exhaust systems. I always wear smooth bottomed shoes. With the car running, I sit on the ground behind the car, and put one foot up and cover the exhaust pipe. You don't need a perfect seal, just cover it. If there are no holes in the exhaust system, the engine will bog down and may even quit. If there are holes in the exhaust, not only will the engine keep running, but the location of the sound should be quite apparent.
There are a few places. Very loud, as Quasi states, implies the flex pipe. It runs between the header and catalytic converter. About $200-$250 to have replaced at a shop/dealer.
It could be a hole in the catalytic converter, but unlikely. Of course, there is everything back from the converter. The further back you go, the quieter a leak will be. You can get the entire exhaust system aft of the Cat for about $200 mail order, and either do it yourself or pay someone an hour or two to install. The dealer will probably have an most astounding price.
Of course, open the hood and make sure the exhaust manifold isn't cracked, or that the turbo case is cracked, if it's a turbo.
So get some old shoes!
Good luck!
