I had a similar noise which eventually went to a metalic rattle.
The cause was that the cowboys that last fitted the front brake pads had ordered the wrong ones, the spring that holds the pads to the caliper had been broken off to fit. As the padd wore down with wear the inside pad got looser and looser first rubbing then rattling.
