Opinions Wanted Messed Up Clutch? -- Long, Not Saab

Hi Everyone --
My sister has a 2001 VW Beetle 5spd. She valet parked it and when she asked for it back, it was delivered in a cloud of smoke. Smoke from under the hood, smoke from under the wheel wells, acutally billowing. Turns out it was clutch smoke, needless to say the unskilled valet driver rode the clutch on the ramp. Not knowing the origin of the smoke at the time the VW dealer said to have it towed, when they got to the dealership from the smell they said it was from the clutch. The parking company refunded the valet fee and apologized. VW says they can't tell if there is damage unless they remove the transmission for $500.00. Three weeks later, the car still smells inside like a burnt clutch. I'm encouraging her to sue in small claims for at least the cost of checking out the clutch plus cleaning the car to get rid of the smell. The valet at first said they would pay, now they are saying basically "get lost." I welcome any opinions on the situation, either here or directly by email.
Thanks! Joe 91 9KT Ain't no stinking valet driving my baby!
