When I replaced my left front wheel bearing last weekend I noticed that the the inner brake disc dust shield (about pie plate size - cheap metal construction) had wear marks on the top whear the brake disc was rubbing against it. My wheel bearing was extremely loose and I theorize that play in the bearing allowed the disc to oscillate enough to scratch the dust shield. This only occurred at high speed when turning (and scared the hell out of me the first time I heard it)
I think a good test for the bearing is to take the wheel off and try to see if the brake disc will move bak and forth in your hand. If there's play in the disc (and it's bolted securely to the hub) then there's likely play in the hub itself.
Replacing the hub was fairly easy.
