I took an '87 9K to Colorado/Wyoming and got around 44mpg in the higher altitudes. I normally got around 32-36mpg on that car depending on wind, gas, or karma. That was at 3600rpm which gave me 74mph, 9mph over the limit, and 1mph under what I hoped the troopers got testy.
I now have two '95 9Ks, CSE and AERO. All 3 are 5spd. The gear ratios have changed, and 74mph is now around 2400rpm. Interestingly, mpg is now 30-31. So if your original question is did the old cars get better mileage, mine did. But the 40+mpg only came at higher altitudes. Something I still don't truly understand.
Don't you wish all cars got 30mpg? Our balance of trade would be great, oil would be less of a political weapon, and we would be doing the right thing for the environment. Bring on the limits!
