'92 not turbo: Rough going at stop

Hey there SAAB repair gurus. Hope you can give some more valuable advice. Since it got really hot around here the past two days (90+), my '92 has been running rough when stopped in the hotter afternoon hours. My wonderful & amazing indie SAAB mechanic has said that we should check the spark plugs first & that it's probably not a fuel issue (somebody slap me I use cheep gas). I'm thinking that my husband replaced these plugs last summer, probably with Bosch platinum. I think Indie SAAB guy says to use NGK plugs. What is the consensus on this issue? Is checking the spark plugs the 1st & easy troubleshoot the idle? IF the sparkplugs don't do the trick, what else do you folks suggest we check before bending over to pay the mechanic?
Thanks for taking the time to help -- Ginger
