the same thing happened to my 92 9000t.
probably the resistor, but check the relays first.
here's what happened to me:
my 92 usually runs about 3/4 in stop and go traffic, on a couple of occasions the temp guage went right up the edge of 'H" so i switched to a cooler fan switch. this was working great for a couple of weeks (fan would kick in at 3/5, keep it at 1/2) until one day i noticed, again in stop n' go, the temp was climbing close to the 'H' again. i made it home and found that the 30amp fan fuse had blown. i put a new fuse, restarted the car, fuse blew out immediately. phone consultation with a couple of mechanics diagnosed it as a bad resistor- not uncommon for the age and mileage of the car.
i was all set to buy the resistor from Santa Monica Saab when Gus, the parts guy there, asked if i was sure it was the resistor because it was $115 and non-returnable. he recommended checking out the relay first ($11) and, sure enough, that's what it was.
