Sorry but serpentine belts do break - check the SAAB archives. The good question is why - was the belt new or old? When should the belt have been replaced according to the BMW maintenance schedule? As the car was sold by a dealer, you may be able to lay responsibility on the dealer if you can show the car was sold in "good order" yet a recommended BMW maintenance had not been performed. I'm more disturbed that a coolant hose was ruptured - has this form of failure occurred before - that is, serpentine belt fails and coolant hose is broken too. Does BMW have a Technical Service Bulletin about this - seems a pretty bad piece of design to me - even BMW engineers must admit that serpentine belts do fail unexpectedly.
