It could be a defective alternator - they test them at the factory, but there still could be problems. I'm not sure why an alternator wouldn't be able to support a larger load - all I can assume is blown diodes in the diode pack - something a mechanic should be able to detect with an oscilloscope.
Are the symptoms just the same as the old one, or slightly different? When driving along, what does the voltmeter in the EDU read? It should be over 13 volts when underway.
