On my way home from work Friday I was rear-ended by an inatentative kid in a Ford Taurus less than 2 miles from home after completing 65 of my 67 mile commute. I guess I prove that statistic about most accidents happening close to home. I hit the brakes hard to avoid an animal running into the road (quick instinct - it was right at an elementary school and a lot of kids were around) and the kid was tailgaiting me something fierce. I stopped cold and looked in the rear view just in time to see him hit me at what I'll estimate at 35-40 (in a 25 zone, which is what I was going).
Damage to the car: the rear of the car has been shifted to the left 1/4" and twiste forward by probably an inch on the left side. The bumper is pushed in, the bumper cover is torn, the hatch hits it's right corner on the quarter panel as it closes (takes a really hard slam), the plastic cover over the right light assembly is cracked from being hit by the hatch, the left quarter panel is creased vertically about 2" behind the wheel well, the left rear door hits the quarter panel as it closes and I think my 1-month old exhaust is cracked somewhere (the tailpipe took part of the hit). The interior floor of the hatch is pushed up several inches at the left rear corner too. The ACC unit popped out of the dash; I just pushed it back in. I think insurance will total her out, it's a '94 CSE non-turbo 5-speed in very good condition with 189,0xx miles, and I figure value is probably sub-$4k, which I'm pretty sure isn't close to what the repair bill will be. And I was just considering dropping collision too :) (not that that would matter in this case where the clear fault lies with the kid who hit me). I'll know more Monday when the agent is in.
Personally I'm basically OK, my neck and back are a bit sore. The headrests on a 9k don't really protect a 6'2" driver too well :( but it's really my back right across my shoulders that hurts.
If insurance totals it out I don't know what I'll do. I like my 9k, but I am sick of chasing small problems around. At 189k miles stuff just keeps on breaking and wearing out, despite the full and complete dealer service history up to 169k miles on 9/11/01 when I bought her (bad omen). I had a Miata and would love another one, but the Wife is fiercely resisting that idea. Perhaps an OG900 convertible? My brother-in-law is a finance manager at a local dealership and they're taking in a '99 Miata on trade and I can get it to close to what they are paying, but I don't think it's that good a deal and the Wife is very leary of taking on more debt. I don't really know, other than that I'd love a convertible if possible. My best friend just bought an SPG too to go with his wife's 9-5, so I may just have to find a Saab replacement. Ultimately, however, the marketplace and my hellacious commute (by local standards, Buffalo to Rochester) may push me to an appliance like an Accord.
At least I'm OK, and the car can be fixed or replaced.
