It finally happened. I ran an ad with a really good price on my baby. A day later the first people to respond took one look, one drive, and wrote me a check for my asking price without even trying to haggle. She was that pretty. I've had her for seven years, which is twice as long as I've owned any car in my life. Without a doubt she was the most satisfying car I've ever owned. And I'm no push over. I'm in the car business and I drive a lot of cars. I spent a year selling new Audis, my dad had a 500SL and my brother an M5--which I drove plenty, and we had a new BMW M3 convertible in stock six months ago. My 91 9000CD non-turbo with 144,000 miles held it's head up well in that company. After driving cars like that, I never felt like I was stepping down when I got into my car. In addition, we buy a lot of Hondas, Subarus, and Toyotas to resell, and looking at the repairs we do to get them ready for sale, the Saab has held up every bit as well mechanically as any of them, maybe better. She still drove better than any Japanese car we've ever had, even when they had half the miles on them. Ultimately she fell victim to the simple fact I don't need a real car. Currently I have an A4, and a Jetta VR6 to drive for FREE and I have the option of buying any cars that I find fun or interesting. That's a hard deal to beat and the Saab hasn't been driven more than about 4000 miles in the last year. I can't justify the upkeep. I don't doubt she'd do another 200,000 miles if I wanted her to. Unfortunately, I just don't need her to. At this point the only kind of car it makes sense to own would be something sporty--and as soon as I find a nice Saab convertible I'm buying it. I'd like to thank everyone on the 9000 board for making owning a 9000 a much more pleasant experience than it might have been. The 9000 board is much more interesting than the others and I intend to stop by perioically--the 9-5 and 9-3 board have so few mechanical problems to talk about they're exchanging recipes and agonizing over whether they should change their own spark plugs.
