Re: "Sluggish" Turbo - especially in hot weather Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: "Sluggish" Turbo - especially in hot weather, Rob ![]() |
All turbocharged cars have problems in hot weather. A turbo takes air and compresses it. In the process, the air gets hotter. On a hot day, you're taking in less dense air, so the turbo has to work harder. And since the air is hotter coming in, it's going to be hotter going out. Hotter air is less dense, so the engine control must add less fuel. Less air, less fuel, less power (than on a cold day).
Now, there is a nice intercooler to help cool off that compressed air. But the intercooler is cooled by outside air - that same 95 degree air sucked in.
So on a hot day compared to a cool day, the turbo has to work much harder to compress the air, the resultant air is less dense, and the air is hotter. The first two bear directly on why a turbo isn't as quick on hot days. As to the last - that may address your bucking.
Hot air is more likely to cause an engine to ping (knock). A condition that tends to cause engines to ping is low rpm, high load. That hesistation may be the engine control trying to compensate for engine knock.
If you aren't running high octane fuel (91 or 93 in the US), try a tank and see if that helps. Make sure you have the EXACT RIGHT NGK spark plugs in there, set to the EXACT RIGHT gap. No substitutions. Make sure your air filter is clean.
Does your car have a boost gauge? If so, did you see a difference in boost levels on the gauge, or were you going by the seat of the pants? Next time, check the boost gauge, because that gives the best indication of boost level.
Of course, it's now 34 degrees with occasional snow mixed in with very cold rain, so I suspect it'll be a few weeks until you see the hot weather again.
Good luck!
