This is a common point of failure on the 9000. The coupler is a rubber joint in the selector rod which can be seen on top of the gearbox. Locate this and have an assistant inside the car move the lever from side to side as far as it will go. If the two metal plates on either side of the rubber don't move together (the rubber has significant "give"), then you need a new coupler.
If it is worn, it will get worse until selecting any gear other than 3rd or 4th will be impossible. In an emergency, plastic cable ties can be wrapped around it to restore operation, but these will also stop the coupler from shearing in the event of an accident (part of its intended function), allowing the gear lever to be pushed into the passenger compartment which may cause injury.
The part is not very expensive and replacement is not very difficult, although it is a bit awkward to get to.
