To access the level-check plug you'll need to remove the left-front wheel, and after doing so you'll see two hex (Allen) plugs on the side of the transaxle case--one on the bottom (drain) and another near the axle (level check). A third is at the top of the case under the battery (fill).
When the car is at a standard level--i.e., as in resting with wheels attached--the oil level should be at the level plug. To obtain that level point I find a place to lay a regular carpenter's level, oriented left-to-right, and try to match the original level when the wheel is off. When the plug is removed, if it is overfilled it will drain out, but if low no oil will be seen. To top it off, add oil to the fill hole until it drains out of the level hole. Use only 10w30 fossil oil (Castrol GTX is fine) to top it off, unless your car is equipped with the Saab synthetic fluid. Your manual should state which, but I don't think the new fluid was used in '96. Under no circumstances should you try to mix oil types.
You could drain all the old fluid and replace it with new, but according to Saab this isn't necessary. You could also replace it with the new fluid, but that requires a special procedure that I can email you if you like. The fluid is >$13/qt. and you'll need three quarts: One to clean as per the Saab TSB instructions and two (technically 1.9) to refill. Do not use any other type of fluid or oil in your transaxle! Other types (especially Redline MTL) may damage your tranny. Been there, done that!
