All in favor of replacing worn parts, but am also much in favor of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I also bought a new thermostat, planning to replace it, until I read of a testing method that sounded reasonable. I suggest you eyeball your thermostat for a common sense appraisal of how it looks, then perform this simple test before possibly replacing a perfectly good thermostat. The test:
you need a pan, and cooking thermometer, water, and your stove. Put the thermostat in the water in the pan. turn the heat on high. Put the thermometor in the water. Watch it. Stir gently. The thermostat should open before the water boils - about 190-200. then transfer the pan to your sink, and start adding cold water. Watch the thermostat and the thermometer. When does the thermostat close? The thermostat has a temperature stamped on the thermostat body somewhere - it should close at around that temperature.
If the thermostat does all this properly, and looks like it is in good shape (no corrosion, gasket in good shape), then why replace it?
And no, the thermostat is not what I would call "easily" accessible, though you can see the housing easily from the top of the engine. I had to disconnnect one large heather hose, two small cooling system hoses, and four nuts on the thermostat housing to get it off. If you do take it off, might as well backflush the system with the thermostat out and the housing re-installed while you are at it.
good luck.
