There are 2 concerns about the design and use of the 9000 auto tranny or any tranny.
One, when designing a tranny there are design goals, a major one is maximum torque. All the parts are designed to this torque and a minimum life as determined by the manufacturer. How much additional torque a transmission can withstand depends in the margins built into the tranny. The resulting margins depend on how conserviatve the manufacturer designs a tranny and how much marketing - customers (SAAB)- owners choose to encroach on those margins. The flat engine torque curve for auto trannies indicates this was the agreed apon maximum torque for the accepted design life.
The second concern is safe handling characteristics of the car. The 9000 torque converter multiplies the engine torque by 2.3 times. Take this torque and muliply it by the transmission ratios and there can be considerable traction problems in lower gears. Saab minimizes this by reducing engine torque at low vehicle speeds.
