No such thing as a dumb question....if it's asked seriously, then it's
not dumb. The damper you referred to is called a waste-gate. It's used
to control the turbo from destroying itself or the engine with too much
boost. The waste-gate is controlled by a waste-gate controller and the
controller is itself controlled by a boost pressure solenoid, which is
itself controlled by the APC circuit in the trionic engine control module.
As you can see, there is a high degree of interrelation between all these
control circuits! The acronym, MAP, stands for manifold absolute pressure. It's the device that Dr. Boost referred to in an earlier post
entitled "No panic button" - it senses the pressure at the intake manifold
and if too high, will cut fuel supply quite suddenly.
