I have a 95' Aero with what sounds like the same problem. The clock and the trip computer (TC) information display on the dashboard should brighten during the day so you can see the information in the brightness of daylight and then dim for nighttime driving.
Now, I've taken it into the Saab dealer here in Edmonton, Alberta twice and both times they've said it must be the dashboard dimmer switch. I even sat in the car with the mechanic to try to explain that the dimmer seems to work and brightens or dims the speedometer, tach, etc. but not the clock - yet my problem affects both the clock and the TC info. display at the same time, so in my mind, the two must be controlled by a sensor. The Saab mechanic responded by saying that he may have to change all the lightbulbs in the dash to fix it. I figured I'd better just take the car home before he makes matter worse.
Ok, my guess is that what looks to me like a photoelectric sensor in the clock / TC control unit is the problem. Does anyone have information on this so that I can take to the dealer before my extended warranty runs out? (Note: a year or so ago the clock unit was replaced because at below -20 degrees the digits wouldn't light up - now I wish I had that old unit back - at least I could tell what was being displayed on the dashboard.)
