Recently replaced tranny in my '92 9kT. Got it remanufactured from thesaabsite.com. While I was in there, I installed an aluminum flywheel and copper/kevlar clutch, but I don't think that really relates to the problem.
Anyway, the problem...
First gear makes a whining noise when accelerating that is similar to what most reverse gears make (reverse still made the usual noise as well). When decelerating in gear, first gear makes a VERY loud whirring noise. Fourth gear does the same above about 2700 RPM although not quite as loud and a little more grindy-sounding, third gear also does it in some cases above 3000 RPM. Second and fifth do not make the noise. Also, when the tranny is still cold in the morning, first gear usually grinds unless double-clutched. Often grinds putting it into gear from a stop as well.
In addition, this weekend after about 200 miles of ~85mph driving with some hard acceleration, all five gears made the whining noise on acceleration just as first gear used to do. All the gears became very sticky and hard to negociate, ESPECIALLY first. I had to double-clutch first gear every time, and sometimes even getting it out of gear was very difficult. The problem mysteriously vanished about 40 hours later. During that period it was driven the 200 miles, then sat all night, then was driven for about 8 miles (it warmed up, problem didn't occur for first mile or so), and parked for about 8 hours, at which point I drove it again and the problem started to appear, then mysteriously vanished. The problems mentioned in previous paragraphs persisted but not in every gear anymore, and shifting was much easier again.
Thesaabsite.com told me it wasn't being made by the transmission. I've had one mechanic tell me it sounds like the tranny is rubbing up against the frame somewhere, but all my motor mounts are brand spanking new. A second mechanic told me it could be the pilot shaft bearing (different from the pilot bearing). The transmission has made the noise since I purchased it, about 3500 miles ago. In case you haven't noticed, I don't know much about transmissions, although I am relatively educated on cars so don't be afraid of technical speak.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!
