Essentially, the BPV's main function is to dump the high pressure, caused by a closed throttle plate, to the low pressure side of the compressor. A piston valve is less likely to leak pressure
at high boost, vis a vis, rubber diaphragms, if it is set-up properly.
It won't really add any performance, but will prevent you from losing
performance, again, if it's set-up properly. Whatever pressure is
formed by the turbo, it has to go through the intercooler first. The
BPV is located after the intercooler. If your turbo is producing
enough pressure to break the intercooler, it's not the fault of the
BPV. The 9000 intercooler should be good for up to 20 psi of
boost. Above that, it's only a matter of time before the plastic
end tanks will eventually fail, I would guess. With an automatic,
I don't think I'd want to be making much more boost, anyway.
